WhatsApp Marketing Cost in India (2026): What Meta Charges per Message

Marketing, utility and service messages, what each one costs in rupees, and which ones are free.

By the Inboxa team · Updated 12 Oct 2026

You want to message buyers on WhatsApp: an order update, a new drop, a reminder about the cart they left. Then you open the pricing page and find categories, templates, windows and a provider quote that does not match the next provider's quote. All you wanted to know was the monthly bill.

This guide works out WhatsApp marketing cost in India in plain rupees: what Meta charges for each kind of message, which messages are free, what a typical month looks like for a small brand, and how to keep the number low without sending less.

One thing first, so nothing here misleads you. The rates below are Meta's approximate charges for India, they change from time to time, and your provider may add its own fee. Check Meta's current rate card before you budget.

Quick answer

In India, Meta bills the WhatsApp Business API per message, and the price depends on the kind of message. A marketing template costs approximately ₹0.86, a utility template such as an order update costs approximately ₹0.13, and replies you send within 24 hours of the customer's last message are free. So 1,000 marketing messages a month come to roughly ₹860 in Meta charges, plus any fee your provider adds; check Meta's current rate card before you budget.

How is WhatsApp marketing priced in India?

Since mid-2025, Meta charges for the WhatsApp Business API per message, not per conversation as it used to. Each message a business sends to start or restart a chat is a template, and every template belongs to a category. The category sets the price.

  • Marketing: offers, new drops, festive sale announcements, reminders to come back, cart reminders. The most expensive kind, at approximately ₹0.86 a message in India.
  • Utility: messages about something the customer already did, such as an order confirmation, a shipping update or a payment receipt. Approximately ₹0.13 a message, a fraction of the marketing rate.
  • Service: any reply you send while the customer's 24-hour window is open, that is, within 24 hours of their last message to you. These are free.

The template itself is a fixed message Meta has reviewed. You write it once, submit it with its category, and once it is approved you can send it to anyone who has agreed to hear from you. Meta can also move a template to the marketing category if it reads like a promotion, even if you submitted it as utility.

What is the free 24-hour window on WhatsApp?

When a customer sends your business a WhatsApp message, a 24-hour window opens. Inside it, every message you send in that chat is a service message, and Meta charges nothing for it. You can answer questions, send photos, share the size chart and your payment link, all free, for as long as the window stays open. Each new message from the customer starts the 24 hours again.

Outside the window it changes. To message someone who went quiet three days ago, you must send an approved template, and the marketing or utility rate applies. That is why the cheapest WhatsApp setups are built around one idea: get the customer to message you first, then do as much as you can inside the free window.

WhatsApp marketing cost examples in rupees

Here is what a few common months come to at the approximate India rates. These are Meta's message charges only, worked out from the rates above, before any provider fee.

What you send in a monthKindApproximate Meta charge

1,000 offer messagesMarketing₹860
2,000 order and shipping updatesUtility₹260
500 offers and 1,500 order updatesMarketing and utility₹625

On top of Meta's charge, most brands pay a provider: the company whose app you use to send templates and manage chats. Some charge a monthly subscription, some add a margin to each message, some do both. When you compare providers, ask each one to show Meta's rate and its own charge on separate lines, so you know exactly what you are paying for.

How to work out your own WhatsApp bill

  1. Count your orders a month. Each order usually needs one or two utility messages: a confirmation and a shipping update.
  2. Count your campaigns. Multiply each broadcast by the number of people it goes to. Three offers to 1,000 opted-in buyers is 3,000 marketing messages.
  3. Multiply by the rates. Utility at approximately ₹0.13, marketing at approximately ₹0.86. Replies inside the 24-hour window add nothing.
  4. Add your provider's fee. Their subscription, their margin per message, or both.
  5. Check Meta's current rate card. Rates change, so confirm the numbers for India before you lock the budget.

WhatsApp marketing costs for Indian brands: what to watch

For Indian D2C brands, WhatsApp is where many buyers expect to finish a purchase: ask about size, confirm COD, get the UPI link, track the parcel. A few things decide whether that stays cheap.

  • Provider margins. A provider's per-message price can be well above Meta's rate. Ask for both numbers before you sign up.
  • Utility is much cheaper. Order confirmations, COD confirmations and shipping updates count as utility, at approximately ₹0.13 instead of ₹0.86. Keep promotion out of them, or Meta may treat them as marketing.
  • Templates need approval. Every template must be approved by Meta before you can send it. Write and submit your Diwali and sale templates well before the sale, not on the morning it starts.
  • Opt-in comes first. Message only people who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. Under India's DPDP Act 2023, keep only the details you need, and make it easy to stop the messages.
  • Festive weeks multiply the bill. A Diwali broadcast to your whole list is the most expensive message you will send all year. Send it to the buyers most likely to act.

How to reduce WhatsApp marketing costs in India

  1. Let the customer write first. A chat they open is free to answer for 24 hours, so give them a reason and a link to message you.
  2. Send transactional updates as utility. Order and shipping messages at the utility rate, not the marketing rate.
  3. Send fewer, better offers. One clear marketing message beats three that ask for the same thing, and it costs a third as much.
  4. Segment before you broadcast. Send offers to recent buyers and people who asked about the product, not every number you have.
  5. Know your provider's margin. Pay for the tools you use, and keep an eye on what is added to each message.

Where Instagram DMs fit in

Instagram does not charge for the DMs a business sends to people who comment on its posts. That makes a comment on Instagram a cheap first touch. With Inboxa, a shopper comments PRICE on your reel and gets a DM within seconds, with your link one tap later. 200 of those DMs a month are free, and paid plans start at ₹999 a month for 1,000 DMs.

If your buyers would rather finish on WhatsApp, make your wa.me link the DM's link. The shopper taps it, a chat with your business opens, and they send the first message, which opens the free 24-hour window on your side. To be clear about who does what: Inboxa sends the Instagram DM; your WhatsApp Business setup sends the WhatsApp messages. Inboxa does not send WhatsApp templates today. A one-tap Chat on WhatsApp button is coming to Inboxa.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Budgeting on an old rate. Meta's prices change. Check the current rate card for India before a big campaign.
  • Putting an offer inside an order update. A discount code in a shipping message can make it marketing, at the higher rate.
  • Broadcasting to everyone. Sending every offer to every number is the fastest way to a large bill and a lot of blocks.
  • Paying to restart chats you could have kept open. Answer quickly while the 24-hour window is still open, instead of sending a template the next day.
  • Comparing provider prices without Meta's rate. A low monthly fee with a large per-message margin can cost more than it looks.

Start the conversation where it costs nothing, on Instagram. The Instagram DM automation page shows how a comment becomes a DM, and pricing lists every plan in rupees.

How much does a WhatsApp marketing message cost in India?

A marketing template message costs approximately ₹0.86 in India, and a utility message such as an order update costs approximately ₹0.13. Replies inside the 24-hour window are free. Check Meta's current rate card before you budget, because rates change and providers may add a fee.

Marketing messages promote something: an offer, a drop or a reminder to come back, at approximately ₹0.86 each.
