WhatsApp Marketing Cost for Indian D2C Brands: 3 Monthly Budgets

What a small, a growing and a larger Indian brand actually spend on WhatsApp each month, and where the money goes.

By the Inboxa team · Updated 12 Oct 2026

You know WhatsApp sells. Your buyers ask about COD there, send screenshots of the UPI payment there, and reply to an offer there faster than to any email. What you do not know is what it will cost when you go from a few hundred orders a month to a few thousand.

Per-message rates are easy to find. A monthly number for a brand like yours is not. This guide works out WhatsApp marketing cost for a D2C brand the way you would in a sheet: orders, order updates, offers, and Meta's approximate charge for each, for a small, a growing and a larger Indian brand.

Then it shows how to cut each bill, and where a free Instagram DM fits before WhatsApp. If you want the rates themselves explained first, read WhatsApp marketing cost in India.

Quick answer

A D2C brand's WhatsApp bill is mostly its offers, not its order updates. At Meta's India rates of approximately ₹0.86 per marketing message and approximately ₹0.13 per utility message, a small brand with 300 orders a month spends roughly ₹938, a growing brand with 1,500 orders roughly ₹7,270, and a larger one with 6,000 orders roughly ₹35,960, before any provider fee. Check Meta's current rate card before you budget.

What goes into a D2C brand's WhatsApp bill?

Three kinds of message, each priced differently by Meta in India. All prices here are approximate, and Meta changes them from time to time, so check Meta's current rate card before you budget.

  • Utility messages: order confirmations, COD confirmations, shipping and delivery updates. Approximately ₹0.13 each. Most brands send one or two per order.
  • Marketing messages: offers, new drops, festive sale announcements, cart reminders, “we miss you” messages. Approximately ₹0.86 each, and sent to many people at once.
  • Service messages: your replies when a customer has written to you in the last 24 hours. Free, however many you send.

On top of that sits your provider, the app you send templates and manage chats from. Providers charge in different ways, a subscription, a margin per message or both, so the budgets below show Meta's charge only. Add your own provider's fee to each.

WhatsApp marketing cost for a D2C brand: three monthly budgets

Each brand below sends two utility messages per order, a confirmation and a shipping update, and a few offer campaigns a month to part of its opted-in list. Customer questions are answered inside the 24-hour window, so they cost nothing.

BrandOrders a monthUtility messagesMarketing messagesApproximate Meta charge
Small3006001,000 (2 offers to 500 people)₹938
Growing1,5003,0008,000 (4 offers to 2,000 people)₹7,270
Larger6,00012,00040,000 (4 offers to 10,000 people)₹35,960

The small brand

A home-run kurti or skincare label with about 300 orders a month. Its 600 order updates cost roughly ₹78. Its two offers to 500 past buyers cost roughly ₹860. Even at this size, the offers are most of the bill.

The growing brand

About 1,500 orders a month, a weekly drop, and a list that has grown past a few thousand numbers. Order updates come to roughly ₹390; the four offers come to roughly ₹6,880. This is where brands first notice WhatsApp on the monthly statement.

The larger brand

About 6,000 orders a month and offers to 10,000 people at a time. The order updates are roughly ₹1,560, but the offers are roughly ₹34,400. During a Diwali sale, with more campaigns to more people, that number can easily double.

How can a D2C brand cut its WhatsApp bill?

The same three brands, sending the same order updates, but each offer goes only to the half of the list that bought or asked recently:

BrandMarketing messagesApproximate Meta chargeSaved a month
Small600₹594₹344
Growing4,000₹3,830₹3,440
Larger20,000₹18,760₹17,200
  1. Send transactional messages as utility. Order, COD and shipping updates belong in the utility category at approximately ₹0.13. Keep discount codes out of them, or Meta may treat them as marketing at approximately ₹0.86.
  2. Use the free 24-hour window. When a customer writes first, every reply for the next 24 hours is free. Answer size and delivery questions there, and share the payment link there, instead of sending a template the next day.
  3. Send offers only to people who opted in and are likely to act. Recent buyers, people who asked about the product, people who tapped your last offer. Every number you leave out saves a marketing message.
  4. Send fewer offers. One clear offer a week usually does the work of three, at a third of the cost, and fewer people block you.
  5. Get customers to start the chat. A chat the customer opens costs you nothing to answer, which is why the first touch matters most. The next section shows where Instagram fits.

Where does Instagram DM automation fit before WhatsApp?

Most Indian D2C brands find buyers on Instagram first. Someone sees a reel, comments “price?” and waits. Instagram does not charge for the DM a business sends back to a commenter, so that first reply costs you no Meta fee at all.

With Inboxa, the commenter gets your DM within seconds, with your link one tap later. If they would rather finish on WhatsApp, make your wa.me link the DM's link: they tap it, a chat with your business opens, and they send the first message. That opens the free 24-hour window, so the size questions, the COD question and the UPI link that follow are all service replies. Inboxa sends up to 500 DMs a day per Instagram account, enough for a busy launch.

To be plain about who does what: Inboxa sends the Instagram DM; your WhatsApp Business setup sends the WhatsApp messages. Inboxa does not send WhatsApp templates or broadcasts today. A one-tap Chat on WhatsApp button is coming to Inboxa.

What is different for Indian D2C brands?

  • COD is common. A quick utility message asking the buyer to confirm a COD order before it ships costs far less than a parcel that comes back.
  • Festive spikes. Diwali, Raksha Bandhan and end-of-season sales bring more campaigns to bigger lists. Budget those months on their own, and get your templates approved by Meta well before the sale starts.
  • Language. Write templates and replies in the language your buyers use, Hindi, Hinglish, Tamil or English. Each template is approved as written, so submit each language you need.
  • Opt-ins. Message only people who agreed to hear from you on WhatsApp. Under India's DPDP Act 2023, keep only what you need and make it easy to stop the messages.
  • Marketplaces too. If you also sell on Meesho or Flipkart, those orders are updated by the marketplace, not by you, so leave them out of your utility count.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Budgeting from order count alone. Order updates are cheap; it is the offers that set the bill. Count campaigns times reach.
  • Broadcasting to the whole list. Every number that never buys still costs a marketing message.
  • Ignoring the provider's margin. Ask for Meta's rate and the provider's charge on separate lines.
  • Paying to restart chats. If a buyer wrote today, answer today, while replies are still free.
  • Using an old rate. Meta's prices change. Check the current rate card before a big month.

Start each chat where the first reply is free. The Instagram DM automation page shows how a comment becomes a DM, and pricing lists every plan in rupees.

Frequently asked questions

How much does WhatsApp marketing cost a D2C brand in India each month?

It depends mostly on how many offers you send and to how many people. At Meta's approximate rates, a brand with 300 orders and two small offers spends roughly ₹938 a month, and one with 1,500 orders and weekly offers roughly ₹7,270, before provider fees. Check Meta's current rate card before you budget.

Are order updates on WhatsApp expensive?

No, they are the cheap part. Order confirmations and shipping updates are utility messages at approximately ₹0.13 each in India. Keep offers out of them so they stay in that category.

How can I reduce my WhatsApp marketing bill?

Send offers only to people who opted in and are likely to act, and send fewer of them. Answer customers inside the free 24-hour window instead of sending a template later. Get buyers to message you first, for example from an Instagram DM with your wa.me link.

Is the first message from an Instagram DM free?

Instagram does not charge for the DM a business sends to someone who commented on its post. If that DM links to your WhatsApp and the buyer messages you there first, your replies for the next 24 hours are free service messages.

Does Inboxa send WhatsApp messages for my brand?

No. Inboxa sends the Instagram DM, and your WhatsApp Business setup sends the WhatsApp messages. Today you can make your wa.me link the link in the DM, and a one-tap Chat on WhatsApp button is coming to Inboxa.

Should a small D2C brand use the WhatsApp Business API at all?

If you send a few offers and answer customers by hand, the free WhatsApp Business app may be enough. The API makes sense when you need order updates sent automatically or offers sent to many opted-in buyers at once.
